About

Main Content

At The Yoga Shala we teach in the tradition of Sri Patthabi Jois, who introduced Ashtanga Yoga to the West from Mysore, India. Ashtanga Yoga is outwardly a dynamic, strong and flowing yoga practice. However, breath awareness is at the core of this practice and facilitates a strong internal focus, which creates the potential for transformation beyond the physical.

The majority of our classes are Mysore-style. Students memorise a sequence of postures over time. Regular practice is fundamental in this tradition. This method allows students of varying levels of experience and ability to practise at a level that is appropriate to their experience and needs. The practice is suitable for anyone and previous experience is not required.

Our teachers are qualified and experienced, with continued professional development a priority. We aim to provide a welcoming, caring and safe environment for your yoga practice.

All teachers at The Yoga Shala draw on their own long-term regular yoga pratice for their teaching. Our teachers are qualified and continue to build their knowledge and understanding of this ancient practice through regular yoga practice, study and by attending workshops with senior teachers.

A decade of dedicated daily practice has helped me strip away the layers to find my true self, and also peace, happiness and clarity in my life. I love how it continues to teach me as there is still so much to learn from this wonderful practice

What Our Customers Say?

  • My yoga community is an important part of my life
I had practiced yoga in many different styles before moving to Port Macquarie and finding a dedicated Ashtanga studio with a great teacher at the Yoga Shala. Ashtanga has now become a regular practise for me and I can't imagine my life without it or the strong connections I have made with the Yoga Shala community.

  • Yoga has made me stronger physically, mentally and spiritually
I had tried yoga before and had enjoyed it but something seemed to be missing from the practice. When I came to practice Ashtanga yoga with Denis for the first time, I properly connected the movement and the asanas with my breath. The practice seemed to suddenly make sense: every movement linked inextricably to either an inhalation or an exhalation. Somehow powerful, calming and invigorating at the same time. Yoga has helped me through some tough times recently (probably with more grace and acceptance than if I did not have a reasonably established practice)
